Two years may not seem like a long time, but in the golfing world a lot has happened since Sang Moon Bae left to serve his mandatory military service. Just from Korea alone, the country has produced a wire to wire winner on the European Tour, which was surpassed by a back to back and now a triple winner on the same Tour. And just a few months ago, Korea celebrated its second winner of the much coveted Players Championship.
Current world number 1854 (😄) Bae had to sit back and watch Soomin Lee, Jeung-hun Wang and Si Woo Kim achieve the aforementioned feats, but now the two time PGA TOUR winner is back and will be hoping for an immediate impact at this week’s Shinhan Donghae Open, which he is a past champion of. When Bae left for the military he was 85th in the world, he has a long way to go to get back to there, one would think…
Bae holds some great memories of this tournament- with back to back wins in 2013 and 2014. This is the first time he will play since that victory three years ago. Can he make it a hat-trick? Surely not…but then again golf is full of surprises.
Bae is using this week and possibly a few more events on the KPGA Tour to help him prepare for the upcoming PGA TOUR season. A win would be a bonus for sure…
Triple European Tour winner Jeung hun Wang has also not played in Korea in quite some time either – dating back to 2015, when he finished T-3rd at the Korea Open. Wang also finished in the same position at the SK Telekom Open a few weeks earlier, posting a joint course record 63 on Saturday, but he was unable to carry his form into the final day, struggling to a 73.
22 year old Wang has somewhat slipped under the Korean media limelight over the past two years, especially if you take into consideration the success he has enjoyed on the European Tour. There’s no doubt that he has the potential to challenge this week, as he bids to win his first title on Korean soil.
Defending champion Gagangeet Bhullar returns to lead the Asian Tour charge for back to back victories. Lets hope the rain stays away this year!
